Apprenticeship

Three Years Apprentice by Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company....

Suddenly I was on my own! I had been on my own before, of course, the whole way through the boading school - but I had the Family before....

I was allocated to the receiver test room, provided with a Continuity Tester and a warning "Look for Dry Joints" - and left to it!
I soon met Arthur B, I even took dinner at his favourite café! He, and his family, were the most hamstruck family that I have met! They all were active in TopBand, and were the Breakfast Club!

I met several G2 +2letters and G5 +2letters, as their stations had been active before the war. Actually I was in the best place to meet them, since they weren't in active service because they were engaged in development of the war time transmitters and receivers!

During the three years by MWTCo, I spent time in the Colour Television Research lab! Spent time in the EHF lab with 10,000Mhz transmitters and receivers communicating over 20 miles. Time in the Test Room testing the transmitters for Droitwich - Extra Low Frequency - and time in the Radar Room, testing the Wind Finding Radar for the Merchant Navy!
I even had time in the Apprentice Training Centre, practising the actual making of the parts which made up the whole!

I made a transmitter/receiver....

comprising of two meter superregen receiver and SEO transmitter!

I acquired "Acorn Triodes" and a "CV 6"!

CV 6
A way to do it is Single Wire Loop (having the power at the mid point) between the G1 and Anode, blocked by a miniature capacitor placed at the G1 end - right on the end!
The tuning is from a 0-3pf Philips concentric Trimmer, connected right in the G1 and Anode terminals of the valve!

The frequency range goes up to 1500Mhz plus with the Acorn, but 500 Mhz plus with the CV6, depending on type! 100 Mhz will be gained by tacking the circuit on the pins of the CV6, instead of "top cap connectors!"

A network was made with the rigs adjusted to 2m, I had the Acorn rig on a Motor Bike, and was permitted to use my rig in the RAYNET, receive only!

When I finished my Apprenticeship....

I was enlisted in National Service, three years because I wanted to keep my trade!
